Erasmus+ Mobility in Volos- Greece
Argonauts on the path to sustainability!
Ensuring a healthy and sustainable life are essential goals advocated by the United Nations (UN), contained in the 2030 Agenda. According to the VIII National Health Conference, the conditions of food, housing, education, environment, work, transport, employment, leisure, freedom and access to health services characterize and define the idea of health in the world. Academic studies indicate that from an early age it is necessary to encourage small individual actions so that, in society, it is possible to act and promote a true environmental pedagogy. In 1986, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined the concept of lifestyle as “a general way of life based on the interaction between living conditions, in a broad sense, and individual standards of conduct determined by sociocultural factors and personal characteristics”. A year later, the Brundtland Report, carried out by the World Commission on Environment and Development, began to link lifestyle and sustainability: "Sustainable development is one that meets present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet them".
However, the negative impact of our way of life on the environment has not stopped growing. Exploitation of natural resources to the limit, water pollution, soil contamination, loss of biodiversity, among other factors, have aggravated the environmental problems that must be resolved throughout this century. Faced with such challenges, schools and society have been making efforts to alert, sensitize, make known the reality, reflect and, above all, lead younger people to act, taking this challenge seriously. It was with these assumptions that students and teachers of some European countries decided to engage in a European project that had everything to do with their intervention in environmental and sustainability issues. The Erasmus+ KA229 project, ECO Echo, has been developed with activities and virtual meetings, and between 22 and 26 November, mobility to Greece – Volos took place. The countries involved are: Portugal, Spain (Basque Country), Turkey, Greece and Estonia (coordinating country). These were days of hard work, with activities and moments of interaction, following all the sanitary rules to prevent pandemic contagion, but which resulted in success. All recognized that empathy and knowledge were present, the objectives proposed for this first stage, in presence, were achieved and the presence part was really necessary. Products made by all countries with recycled or reused materials were shared, two workshops were held in which each country designed its country's products or icons in simple, selected materials, prepared and applied a questionnaire on the attitudes of the population of Volos towards healthy and sustainable gestures, from a perspective of active citizenship (always accompanied by the Greek students in each group).
These were results that will be dealt with either by the school or by the Municipality of Volos. In addition, several visits took place: Mount Pelion, to appreciate the vegetation and picturesque architecture of two historic villages (Makrytnitsa and Milies), relating History, Geography and Environmental Sciences; visit the Cathedral of S. Nicolas and the Church of S. Constantino, which dazzle and recall the various peoples who invaded the region over several centuries, as well as the Byzantine heritage that Volos and the region are keen to preserve, not forgetting the visit to the Town Hall, where we were introduced to the entire legend of the Argonauts and the reason for the Argo name for the vessel that is the visiting card of this city. Finally, all the students and teachers involved gave their testimony about these unforgettable days and activities and interaction moments were programmed that will follow in the coming months.
What words were highlighted at this meeting? Share, socialize, get to know each other, relearn, reuse, transform. They will certainly be the words of young people that allow us to conclude that we are on the right path towards a more cared for, healthier, sustainable and more solidary world.
