We are a nonprofit Educational Centre subsidized by the State with social interest and response. We are integrated in the “Federation of Ikastolas” (Basque Schools), dedicated to the preservation of the Basque language and culture and, at the same time, focused on multilingualism and integral education. Though one of our goals is to transmit Basque culture and language, European projects, relationships and cooperation have been, are and will be a way of fulfilling the aims of the educational curriculum and the aims of our school policy. Promoting intercultural understanding and active citizenship important for the education of our students. So far, these European projects have allowed us to integrate several subjects in the process of working on the theme of European active citizenship at different levels: individual, regional and national. Our school has taken part in several European projects in the last decade. Most of them have been bilateral exchanges with schools of different countries. We have worked in projects about culture, food, school facilities, etc….with some quite different countries such as: Italy, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovenia and France. Over 200 students have taken part in total in those exchanges. At this moment, we are taking part in a two-year Erasmus+ project KA-229 called “Roots” along with schools from Naantali (Finland), Limassol (Cyprus), Catania (Italy), Antalya (Turkey) and Kárvina (Czech Republic). All this, evidently, involves carrying out different tasks with students travelling during the exchange weeks and getting ready to receive visitors, doing our best to be an unforgettable experience from which to learn, grow and make new friends, attending meetings, preparing projects, filling forms, planning,…. The people involved in this application are the following: Gaizka Untzueta: Coordinator of Erasmus + Projects at school. Teacher and Head of Social Sciences Department . Joseba Tristan: Assistant in Erasmus+ Projects at school. Basque and Spanish languages teacher. Josu Sueskun: Headmaster of Lizaqrra Ikastola. They have all been involved in different European programmes connected with foreign languages and cultural aspects in recent years, taking part in several summer courses in different countries such as Malta, Great Britain and Ireland, or forming themselves throughout the year in etwinning or EUROCLIO seminars. Therefore, we are convinced that they are the appropriate type of staff to carry out this project.
